Why is the transporter the central story?

Human SLC22A4, historically called OCTN1 and now often called the ergothioneine transporter or ETT, moves ergothioneine across cell membranes with high specificity. Cells expressing the transporter accumulate and retain ergothioneine; cells without it show little uptake.1

That selective uptake gives ergothioneine a stronger biological identity than a generic antioxidant claim. It provides a plausible system for delivering and retaining the compound where transporter expression is high.

What does ergothioneine do after uptake?

Ergothioneine is a stable sulfur-containing compound that can participate in redox defense, interact with reactive species, and bind certain metal ions. Its chemistry and cellular retention support study in tissues exposed to oxidative stress.2

What does human evidence add?

A one-year randomized pilot in 19 older adults with mild cognitive impairment reported no safety signal and encouraging changes in selected learning and biomarker outcomes.3
