What is a probiotic?+

A probiotic is a live microorganism that confers a health benefit when administered in an adequate amount. Being alive or appearing in a fermented food is not enough by itself; identity and evidence matter.

Is a higher CFU count always better?+

No. CFU describes viable microorganisms, not clinical relevance. The useful amount depends on the specific strain, intended use, formulation, and evidence.

Why does the strain name matter?+

Effects demonstrated for one strain cannot automatically be assigned to another member of the same species. A decision-ready label should identify genus, species, and strain designation.

Are probiotics and prebiotics the same?+

No. Probiotics are live microorganisms. Prebiotics are substrates selectively used by host microorganisms. FOS is a prebiotic ingredient, not a probiotic organism.

Do all probiotics need refrigeration?+

No. Storage requirements depend on the organisms and formulation. Follow the product label, and look for viability stated through the expiration or use-by date.
