We believe an inositol label should tell you which form you are getting. Naming myo-inositol, D-chiro-inositol, or their disclosed relationship connects the formula to the relevant biology and research. Identity is what makes the ingredient meaningful.

What does inositol actually mean?

Inositol is often discussed as though it were one ingredient. Chemically, it describes a family of nine stereoisomers: molecules with the same formula but different spatial arrangements. Myo-inositol is the most abundant form in the body. D-chiro-inositol is made from myo-inositol through an insulin-dependent epimerase and participates in partly distinct signaling processes.1

That distinction matters. Evidence produced with myo-inositol cannot automatically be assigned to an unspecified “inositol” ingredient, and evidence for a defined MI/DCI combination cannot be assigned to either form alone.

Why is it studied in women's metabolic health?

Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol participate in insulin-linked second-messenger systems. This made them candidates for study in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a heterogeneous endocrine and metabolic condition. Human trials have examined metabolic markers, menstrual outcomes, androgen measures, and fertility-related endpoints.2

Findings from human research suggest potential improvement in selected metabolic measures. The 2023 international guideline therefore allows inositol to be considered according to individual preferences, while noting that the available studies do not establish one specific type, dose, or combination for everyone.

How should you read an inositol label?

First, identify the form: myo-inositol, D-chiro-inositol, or an unspecified inositol. Second, check the amount per full daily serving—not per capsule. Third, if two forms are used, calculate the ratio from disclosed amounts. Finally, compare the product's claims with the population and outcomes actually studied.3

ESTHELIV uses unqualified “inositol” in some general metabolic formulas and specifically names myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol when the 40:1 relationship is central to the formula. We do not treat those label descriptions as interchangeable.

Is inositol a B vitamin?+

It is sometimes called vitamin B8, but it is not recognized as an essential B vitamin because the body can synthesize it and no established dietary reference intake exists.

Are all forms interchangeable?+

Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol are related but participate in different signaling contexts. The most useful product comparison matches the named form or combination to the research supporting it.

Does inositol treat PCOS?+

Human studies have examined inositol for selected metabolic and reproductive outcomes in PCOS, and international guidance allows it to be considered according to individual preferences. It should complement—not replace—individualized PCOS care.
