ESTHELIV uses the word prebiotic deliberately. FOS has a credible microbiome rationale because human research shows that defined amounts can increase fecal bifidobacteria. FOS is a family of short fructose chains, often terminating in glucose. Human digestive enzymes do not fully break these bonds in the small intestine, so FOS reaches the colon where microorganisms can ferment it. The current consensus definition of a prebiotic requires a substrate to be selectively used by host microorganisms and confer a health benefit.

Why it deserves attention

FOS deserves attention because it changes the food environment of the microbiome rather than adding live organisms. In a human dose-ranging study, short-chain FOS increased bifidobacteria at 10 and 20 g/day, with more gas reported at 20 g/day. That is exactly why amount matters: microbial activity and tolerance move together.
